  • Streamgaging Support for USGS: Thirty nine (39) organizations endorsed our letter to the Interior Department &OMB last fall urging full implementation of the NSIP beginning next year. In addition, 26 officials representing 18 states have joined this effort, endorsing a separate letter. Last February (2008), the Bush Administration asked Congress to cut the budge almost 4% for the USGS, overall, serious cuts to the Water Resources Discipline, to the Cooperative Water Program.  On February 25, 2008, 34 organizations expressed their support for much stronger USGS Streamgaging Programs in letters to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. You may want to endorse an updated letter to Congress NOW and refer to our Streamgages page for additional information or contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. • National Assessment of State Water Planning & Implementation Progress –a proposal under discussion & development: During the past two years, the ICWP gave considerable attention to the progress many states and interstate organizations are making in the development, revision and implementation of comprehensive water plans. In order to advance our understanding, promote the sharing of successful strategies and identify significant needs and impediments, we developed plans for a national assessment to be conducted within the next two years. Our effort to coordinate this assessment involved the Corps of Engineers, but we were unsuccessful in reconciling our priorities with their strategic planning schedule. The Corps is now proceeding independently with that assessment and hopes that many water organizations and agencies will support their work. Initial reaction to this federal interpretation of state progress has not been positive. If you are interested, we are refining the plan for initiation next year and all Members are welcome to participate. Let This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
